Indication
This is a modern formulation that was originally developed to treat low back pain, sciatica and other forms of arthritis of the lower body in elderly patients with Kidney deficiency. It was noted to have some beneficial side effects, i.e. restoring sexual function in both male and female patients. The formula is now widely prescribed for male sexual dysfunction and female infertility.
The formula combines herbs that tonify the Kidney Yang with herbs that nourish the Kidney Yin and enrich the Kidney Essence. In addition there are herbs that nourish the Blood. The beauty of this formula is that several of the Kidney Yang tonifying and Essence enriching herbs also have the action of dispelling Wind-Damp and are effective in Wind-Cold-Damp painful obstruction (bi syndrome). The supporting herbs, which nourish the Blood, thus serve a dual purpose. The first is to assist in dispelling Wind: because Wind may damage the Blood and also because Blood deficiency predisposes to invasion by Wind. Secondly, because the Blood provides a substrate for the Kidney Essence, they support the formula’s action of enriching the Kidney Essence.
Another important use for this formula is in the treatment of chronic allergic disorders (e.g. allergic rhinitis, atopic asthma, atopic eczema) during the remission phase. The aim of treatment in these cases is to warm-tonify the Kidney Yang and enrich the Kidney Essence in order to strengthen the defensive Qi (which is produced jointly by the Yang Qi of the Kidney together with the Lung Qi).
The synergistic actions of the ingredients are as follows:
Rehmannia root (shu di huang), Morinda root (ba ji tian), Epimedium herb (yin yang huo), Lycium fruit (gou qi zi), Eucommia stem bark (du zhong), Dipsacus root (xu duan), Cuscuta seed (tu si zi): enrich the Kidney Essence
